Runshaw College
8,000 students supported with remote course materials
Runshaw College is a further education college in Lancashire with more than 8,000 students and 600 administrative staff. When COVID-19 closed the campus, thousands of students suddenly needed printed course materials and welcome packs delivered to their homes so teaching could continue. By moving to Postworks Send, Runshaw replaced a time-consuming manual process with a simple online workflow that staff could manage remotely in just a few clicks.
The Challenge
Campus closures made the old postroom process unworkable
Before the pandemic, Runshaw’s postal routine ran smoothly and predictably as part of the college’s wider administrative rhythm. Welcome packs, letters to parents, enrolment documents and course materials were all prepared in advance, then typed, printed, carefully checked, manually stuffed into envelopes and delivered to the postroom before the strict 3.30 pm cut-off each day. As long as every department met that deadline, the system worked reliably and post reached students and families on time without issue.
When COVID-19 arrived, everything changed almost overnight. Around 8,000 students and hundreds of staff were suddenly required to work from home, while teaching still depended on printed course materials being delivered quickly and accurately. These packs were essential for keeping lessons on track, supporting coursework and ensuring students could continue progressing towards their qualifications.
However, the college no longer had access to its on-site postroom processes, printers or coordinated handover routines, and there was no practical way to manage the same volume of outgoing post remotely. What had once been a well-structured and dependable daily routine quickly turned into a complex, time-sensitive logistical challenge that required a completely new approach.

The Turning Point
Lockdown created an immediate need for remote post
At the start of lockdown, Gill Davies needed an immediate and reliable way to send thousands of students and staff the printed materials required to keep teaching and learning going from home. With the campus closed and staff working remotely, the traditional process of printing documents, manually stuffing envelopes and physically delivering them to the postroom was no longer viable. What had once been a controlled, on-site routine suddenly became a major operational bottleneck, with no practical way to scale or manage it from a distance.
A colleague recommended Postworks as a potential solution. Gill quickly discovered that the service could consolidate everything into a single, simple online workflow. Bulk course packs, routine administrative letters and student welcome packs could all be uploaded and sent without relying on physical postroom processes.
The system also supported coloured course materials, ensuring that learning resources maintained their quality and presentation even when produced remotely. Crucially, it gave Gill full visibility over every item being sent, removing the uncertainty of manual handling, and provided responsive UK-based support whenever guidance or reassurance was needed during a rapidly changing situation.
“You simply upload a document and Postworks does the rest. It is incredibly professional, time-saving, efficient and easy.”
